With our lives becoming more and more intertwined with the
Internet it is becoming impossible to function efficiently without
it. This fact is also becoming true even faster for our all to
Internet savvy children who use it to do homework, contact friends
and entertain themselves every day.
Although the Internet has brought amazing gains and made
communication even faster and easier, it has also brought a whole
new group of dangers for our children. From high-tech porn-pushers
to online stalkers to seemingly innocent, but overly violent, video
games our children are in danger every time they go online. Some
parents try to keep their children offline, but that isn't terribly
practical. Kids need to access the Internet if for no other reason
than to do research and homework. So how do you provide Internet
safety for kids so they can still go online?
Here are three simple things you should do to keep them safe online.
First, talk to them about the dangers of the Internet. Let them know
that there are people online that are looking to hurt them or take
advantage of them in some way. Obviously you don't want to terrify
your children, but it is important that they understand there are
people out there that will hurt them if they can.
Second, make sure they use the computer in a common area in your
house. They are much less likely to get themselves into bad
situations when other family members are nearby.
Third, install parental control software so that you can be
confident that their internet safety is not compromised while you
are away from them.
So what is parental control software and how does it work? Parental
control software is an application you install on your computer that
will allow you to filter and track what your kids do online. There
are several commercially available packages and they generally allow
you to block access to particular websites or a class of websites
such as adult content sites. You can also set up keystroke
monitoring so that you will know if your child is conversing with
someone who might be an internet predator.
There are also time
controls that you can use to make sure your children are only online
when you are home and able to monitor their activities. The software
will also send you email with logs of all their online activities so
that you can monitor their computer use remotely.
So why would you use parental control software even if your children
only use the computer in a common area of your house? Well, first of
all there is no way that you can be around at all times your child
is online plus you can't stand over their shoulders while they use
the computer. Our children know more about computers than we do.
They will be able to get themselves into danger even if you believe
you have protected them. The software allows you to have peace of
mind by knowing that even if you can't see everything at least you
have protected your child from most of the dangers just by
installing the software and if your child is still exposed to a
danger you will be notified via email or text. Do not take Internet
safety for kids lightly. Install a parental control system today.
